At Botania Garden Design, sustainability is not a feature, it is the framework through which every garden is designed. It means understanding place, soil, water, light and ecology and shaping gardens that respond intelligently to these forces in the context of a changing climate. Our work is grounded in observation, ecology and a deep respect for place, resulting in gardens that are resilient, biodiverse and designed to mature beautifully over time. 

By working with soil conditions, drainage, aspect and local climate, and choosing appropriate plant selection and groupings, we create landscapes that are resilient, resource-efficient and naturally balanced. Climate-appropriate planting, improved soil structure and thoughtful material choices help reduce water consumption, minimise reliance on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and lower long-term maintenance inputs. At the same time, biodiverse planting supports pollinators and strengthens local habitat networks.

Sustainable garden design begins with understanding how a garden functions: how water flows, where shade settles, which areas are exposed and how planting responds across the seasons. It’s also about understanding the trajectory of a changing climate and consider drought, intense rainfall and temperature fluctuation from the outset. By selecting climate-resilient plants, designing layered planting for shade and shelter, and integrating natural drainage, including rain gardens, we create gardens that are robust, balanced and quietly resilient.

Healthy soil underpins every successful garden. Soil is a living ecosystem, rich in microbes, fungi and organic matter, supporting plant health while improving structure and water retention. Where needed, we assess and improve soil through regenerative methods such as aeration, organic enrichment and sustainable drainage. Soils on new builds in Berkshire are often highly compacted so they benefit from improvement prior to planting. By prioritising soil health, we support long-term planting resilience and reduce reliance on artificial inputs.

Biodiversity is integral to sustainable garden design. A biodiverse garden is more resilient, more dynamic and more alive. Our biodiverse and pollinator-friendly garden design uses layered planting, native and wildlife-supportive species, and natural features such as water bowls, log piles, dead hedges and meadow planting. These elements create a network of habitats that support pollinators, birds and small mammals, strengthening the wider ecosystem.

A sustainable planting scheme works with the inherent conditions of a garden rather than against them. Plants flourish when grown in environments that reflect their natural habitats. We carefully consider soil type, microclimate and aspect, selecting plants suited to shaded areas, sunny and exposed sites, dry or seasonally wet soils, and varying pH levels. This “right plant, right place” approach results in healthier planting, reduced maintenance and gardens that feel grounded in their setting.

Water must be carefully considered in a changing climate, both in times of abundance and scarcity. We design water-wise gardens using drought-tolerant planting, mulching, shading, rainwater harvesting and effective drainage. This balanced approach reduces irrigation needs while ensuring gardens can cope with heavy rainfall, supporting sustainable water use.

We minimise unnecessary hard landscaping and prioritise the use of natural materials in our designs to create warmth and connection. Additionally, we carefully consider the cost and carbon footprint of the materials we choose.
